Vi vil gratulere Kristine Ødeby Haugan, styremedlem i Norsk Arkeologisk Selskap, med disputas av sin doktoravhandling den 23. mai 2025.
Doktoravhandlingen har tittelen An Archaeology of Nordic Seasonality. Urban life shaped by seasonal rhythm in Oslo 1100–1400:
Stark seasonal differences in temperature and light define the regions of the northern latitudes. Yet, curiously, archaeologists often envision the past through the sun-drenched lens of summer. With aspirations of introducing seasonal mindfulness into archaeological research, the dissertation suggests a methodology for studying seasonality in an urban archaeological material, aiming to reshape how seasonality is approached in future excavations.
At the heart of the research lies a fundamental inquiry: How did the dramatic shifts of Nordic seasons influence urban life during the High Middle Ages? The seasonal rhythm of urban existence comes alive through an in-depth examination of the Follobanen Bispegata excavation, conducted in Oslo’s Old Town in 2017 and 2018. Through four approaches—focusing on spaces, artefacts, environments, and texts—the study investigates Nordic seasonality across five material categories: architectural layouts, winter-related artefacts, lighting equipment, plants, and farming tools. A pivotal question drives this exploration: How do seasonal events manifest in the archaeological record?
Notably, this focus on the ebb and flow of Nordic temporalities has illuminated new insights into urban space utilisation, revealing how medieval inhabitants adapted their surroundings to the changing seasons. With its novel perspective, this dissertation not only broadens our understanding of seasonal dynamics but also shines a much-needed light on the profound impact of winter on medieval society.
